The Wheel of Life (Bhavacakra) is commonly seen on the entrance walls to monasteries and on thangkas, or painted scrolls, throughout Tibet and other Buddhist countries of the Himalayan region. In graphic form, it illustrates the essence of the Buddhist teachings and the path to liberation from samsara, or cyclic existence. The wheel is held by Yama, Lord of Death, who symbolizes the inevitability of death and impermanence of all things. In the centre of the wheel are the three root delusions, ignorance, hatred, and desire - symbolized by a pig, snake, and rooster. The wheel also teaches the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, the various realms of existence and the law of karma.
Buddha is depicted in the top corner of the painting pointing the way out of suffering to nirvana.
